Sykes Pumps provides process-critical over-pump at Caister water recycling centre


Hire specialist, Sykes Pumps, has provided a business-critical over-pumping solution to enable Anglian Water to manage return activated sludge (RAS) levels during infrastructure maintenance at the company’s Caister water recycling centre in Norfolk.

The RAS content required in the final settlement tanks varies depending on throughput of waste water at the facility. Surplus RAS from the final settlement tanks is returned to the primary processing tanks as an essential component in beginning the processing cycle.

Adjustable bellmouths are used to control the amount of RAS taken from the final settlement tanks for transfer back to the head of work. When these were taken offline for routine maintenance, Anglian Water turned to Sykes Pumps for a temporary solution that would manage RAS levels accurately and efficiently across both final and primary processes.

Following a site visit to fully assess the project requirements, Sykes Pumps provided six Super Wispaset 200 eight-inch diesel pumps for each of the final settlement tanks nos.1-4. The company also provided an additional two Super Wispaset 200 pumps for standby use. For tank nos. 5 and 6, where the required flow rate was lower, a six-inch Super Wispaset 150 pump was installed for each tank, with a further six-inch pump installed as standby.

Sykes Pumps supplied the equipment to site with four fuel tanks, 174m of eight-inch wire armour hose, 84 metres of six-inch wire hose, 84 metres of eight-inch polyurethane piping and 42 metres of six-inch polyurethane piping, enabling the pumps to be connected to the existing pipework.

Control valves were fitted into the pipe gallery below ground and connected to a temporary piping manifold by Anglian Water’s IOS (integrated operations solutions) team to monitor sludge blanket levels using telemetry technology provided by Sykes so that the flow could be adjusted as required.

However, the over pump  was so process critical that a week was invested in installing, commissioning and testing before management of the RAS was transferred to the temporary set up. Our technical support and local serving capability was on hand throughout.”
